Scope note
Species of intelligent, social hominid, the largest living primate, having a large head, broad chest, long arms, a flat nose with large nostrils, and fur that is black with a silver saddle on the back of adult males. The eastern gorilla differs from the western gorilla in being larger, darker, lacking an overhanging tip on its nose, having a more robust body, being less arboreal, and typically living in a larger family group of up to 40 individuals. In some classifications, both the Eastern Gorilla and the Western Gorilla are classified as a single species.
